Richard H. Sonnenberg Sr., 88, of Kendallville, Indiana, passed away on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at Parkview Randallia Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Born on March 28, 1936, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Richard proudly served his country as a United States Navy veteran during the Korean War. After his military service, he dedicated 42 years to a career as a truck driver, with the final 13 years spent at Blue Flame Gas Company, retiring in 2001.
Richard was known for his love of puzzles and classic cars, passions he carried throughout his life. A devoted fan of drag racing, he not only enjoyed watching races but also lent a hand in working on the cars, sharing his enthusiasm with the racing community. One of his cherished memories was attending the NHRA U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis with his family.
He is survived by his son, Richard H. Sonnenberg Jr., of Fremont, Indiana; his daughter, Elizabeth Poyser of New Haven, Indiana; and his beloved grandchildren, R.J. Sonnenberg, Brianna Poyser, and Ethan Poyser. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Gertrude Sonnenberg.
Burial with military honors will take place at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota, honoring his service and dedication.
