Richard L. Barkman of Auburn, Indiana, passed away on Friday, May 10, 2024 at Parkview DeKalb Hospital in Auburn. He was born January 24, 1938, in Argos, Indiana. Richard was a graduate of Elkhart Central High School and was a starting forward on the basketball team that made it to the IHSAA Final Four in 1956. After graduating from Ball State Teacher College, he and his wife Sally made their home in Auburn, where he began his career as an Educator. He began his teaching at McKenney-Harrison Elementary and McIntosh Junior High School. He continued as the Assistant Principal and Athletic Director at McIntosh Junior High School and then DeKalb Middle School. Richard was principal at DeKalb Middle School for eleven years, and then the Business Manager for DeKalb County Central United School District until he retired in 2000.
Dick treasured the years he and his family lived in Auburn. He was a member of Saint Mark’s Lutheran Church. He was a lifelong sports fan, following his favorite basketball and baseball teams. In retirement, he volunteered at the Heimach Center, serving on several committees.
Richard is survived by a son, Michael Barkman (former daughter-in-law Patricia) of Sun City Center, Florida; daughter Lori (Jeff) Fitch of Alameda, California; grandsons, Nicholas (Kimberly) Barkman and Eric Barkman both of Indianapolis; great grandchildren, Kayne and Samuel Barkman; sister-in-law, Shirley of Goshen; and niece Cathy (Sam) Young of Goshen.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Sally Jo Barkman; son, Steven Barkman; parents Herman and Shirley Barkman; and cousins, Mary Catherine Rosentreter, Ron Miller, and Janet Fitzsimmons.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2024 from 3-7 p.m. at Pinnington Funeral & Cremation Services 502 N. Main Street, Auburn. The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, May 17, 2024 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Pastor Jon Hunter will be officiating. Memorial donations may be made to Saint Mark’s Lutheran Church 211 W. 9th Street Auburn, Indiana 46706. Burial will be held in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, Indiana.
